Ductile Iron castings
Ductile iron complying with the highest international standard
Foundry Saguenay is on the Lloyd's Register List of Approved Manufacturer for ductile iron castings up to 5,570 kg (12,280 lbs). This means that when you buy our castings, you can expect quality and consistency.
Advantages of ductile iron
Ductile iron, or spheroidal iron, can sustain elongation, a marked difference with gray iron. It also has a ductile failure mode, which makes for an excellent material for applications where traction properties are important. Ductile iron castings also obtains good results on impact tests, like Charpy.
Microstructure and mechanical results of ductile iron
![]() |
The spheroidal microstructure gives the material its ductility. It is obtained my adding magnesium to the laddle. The Mechanical properties of ductile iron can then be modified by adding certain perlitising elements. With it, we can obtain a range of materials, from a ferritic matrix that can reach over 18% elongation, to a very perlitic matrix that can obtain 100,000 psi of tensile strenght. In both cases, high nodularity is very important to maintain a good structural integrity. To ensure good results, Saguenay Foundry applies the strictest control over its process, assuring quality and consistency. |

Patternless ductile iron casting
For your prototyping and short production needs, Foundry Saguenay has developed a new moulding technology that can machine sand mould directly. It saves between 30% and 80% over fabrication of the pattern equipment and a casting can be poured in half the time.
